Frank Lloyd Wright: Organic Architecture for the 21st Century

December 18, 2011 - April 29, 2012
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home, studio and architectural campus in Scottsdale, Arizona, Phoenix Art Museum presents a major exhibition that offers a fresh perspective on the celebrated architect’s seven-decade career.  Frank Lloyd Wright: Organic Architecture for the 21st Century is the first exhibition to explore Wright and his relevance today through a survey of more than 40 projects, including his vision for the decentralized city, presented through rarely seen drawings, scale models, furniture, films and photographs. Regarded by many as the greatest American architect of the 20th century, Frank Lloyd Wright was a champion of organic architecture.  His visionary designs emphasized use of natural materials, harmonious integration of building and landscape and high functionality.  Many concepts developed in Wright’s revolutionary work are central to today’s sustainable, green architecture movement. Frank Lloyd Wright:  Organic Architecture for the 21st Century is organized by Phoenix Art Museum and Milwaukee Art Museum in conjunction with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Donate to St. Mary's Food Bank Today

February 28, 2012
The St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, is asked the same question again and again: How do you stretch your dollars so effectively? While it might seem impossible to feed 15 people for 30 days with only $200, at St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, because of their nationally recognized food acquisition and distribution program, they are able to take every $1.00 you give and turn it into enough food to provide seven meals, a truly cost-effective way to see that the hungry throughout Arizona are fed. At a time of year when families gather at tables filled with family favorites, the disastrous fact that one out of every four children is suffering with what “statistical analysts” call “food insecurity” means that the most vulnerable are going hungry. If you were to ask a child who is only 4-years-old what it is like not to have enough food to eat, she wouldn’t use the fancy words used in statistical reports. She would just tell you, “my tummy aches. I’m hungry.” This is the sad reality St. Mary's faces every day. And what’s more, this is also the case for many senior citizens who for years have sent gifts to St. Mary's, and now are in line getting help from the very organization they have so generously supported in the past. You don’t have to let this happen. Not this year. Not ever. But St. Mary's needs your help right now. Over the next 60 days, they must raise $4 million to procure food for those who need help the most. This is why their request is so urgent. With your help today, they will continue to see that no one goes hungry this year. For more information, visit www.FirstFoodBank.org.

Don't Buy Alcohol for Underaged Kids

May 31, 2012

Southwest Behavioral Health Services wants parents to know where their children are getting alcohol, and have launched the "Think Twice, Lock it up" campaign.  One of the easiest ways youth obtain alcohol is from home. And, friends and family members should think twice before buying alcohol and tobacco products for under aged kids.  You could face up to $2,500 in fines and even go to jail for a year.  So, if you’re asked to do a favor by purchasing tobacco and alcohol for anyone under 21, think twice. Don’t buy; don’t supply. It’s a Class 1 misdemeanor on your permanent record.  It will cost you more than you bargained for. For more information about preventing underage drinking and to receive a free liqueur lock contact the South Mountain WORKS Coalition at 602-305-7126. For more information about Southwest Behavioral Health Services, visit www.sbhservices.org.
