Imagine a P.E. teacher, volleyball coach, basketball coach, baseball coach, athletic director, tutor, father and husband. You may be picturing eight different people in your mind or even a super hero by now, however, I am describing one amazing educator named Jacob Giger. Jacob Giger is a P.E. teacher at Sunset Ridge, responsible for teaching 1st through 8th grades. He greets all students by name and regularly communicates with students and parents addressing accomplishments and inspires them to correct any areas of concern. On any given day, he can be found teaching up to 90 students at one time. He coordinates game rotations with the other P.E teachers so the students get to use their P.E. time to its fullest potential, while implementing the new Common Core Standards. He has patience for students who are struggling or need special accommodations. He is very well respected by his peers and the community he teaches in. Beyond being a P.E. teacher he oversees all the sports related to his school, as the athletic director. He orders equipment that is needed, schedules games and buses to the games and has informational meetings for parents. He works extra long hours to make sure all the sports are running smoothly. He brings a sense of community amongst his students and parents, and enjoys being a part of their lives as though they are his own family. He is a very passionate teacher and coach. There is nothing he wouldn’t do to make his students shine and get recognition. For example, in early February there was a girls basketball state tournament. He wanted very much to have his girls be in the tournament so they had the chance to show their potential. He came upon a conflict with scheduling. The state championship was on the same day as his two oldest sons birthday’s. Of course he did not want to miss his boys’ birthday party, but he wanted to make sure his girls basketball team got the recognition they deserved. He made it possible to go to both events. It just shows how much passion he has for the teams he coaches and the students he teaches. When Mr. Giger is not teaching P.E. or coaching, he is helping other students with tutoring. His dedication to students’ learning has lead to huge gains in student achievement. He has such an amazing way of helping students understand difficult concepts that they will never forget. His teaching style, calm demeanor and outgoing personality makes learning fun. When Mr. Giger’s long days are over, he goes home to his wife and three amazing boys that just adore him. He starts his day all over again by helping them with homework and mentoring them about education, sports, character and most of all being a role model. Mr. Giger has an amazing commitment to improve the lives of young people in both academics and athletics and I hope you will agree that he is deserving of this recognition.
