I am nominating an amazing 6th grade teacher, Michelle Capriotti from Charlotte Patterson Elementary. While my daughter was in 5th grade, I heard about how a different teacher in 6th grade there was the teacher everyone wanted. After discussing with my daughter's 5th grade teacher to find out who would be the best fit for my daughter, I was surprised she said Mrs. Capriotti. After talking to Mrs. Capriotti in the hallway asking her what she thought her strengths were as a teacher, she said math. She was not the best at math when she was younger and has developed amazing ways to teach those that struggle in math to help them learn. She does not jump to teach the "smart" kids, she wants to help a child learn and understand, not just teach them to just get the A. Her mother was an honors English teacher and she taught Mrs. Capriotti to excel at language arts as well. My daughter, the shy girl who did well in school entered Mrs. Cap's class and after 1-2 months, I had a child with confidence, poise and one that came out of her shell because of her teacher. Mrs. Cap was an amazing role model not only teaching classroom instruction, but life lessons as well to push them to be ready for Jr. High. My daughter will forever be grateful to her teacher for all that she learned from her. In her words, "My teacher was the most amazing, beautiful, talented and smart teacher I will ever meet. I wish I could take 6th grade again. She taught me more than I have learned from any teacher I have had my whole life. I hope to be as amazing as she is one day". 6th grade is definitely not an easy grade to teach. The attitudes, the "need to be funny" kids, the rude and disrespectful kids and the ones that are there to learn and have fun doing it is a mixture that makes it hard to be a teacher these days. With a classroom size close to 30, she somehow makes it all happen. Mrs. Capriotti is a mother of 4, one with special needs, all going to 4 different schools. She also teaches fitness classes and performs in musicals and plays during her extremely limited spare time. Her life is extremely full and she would not change a minute of it except to add more time to each day. She is devoted to teaching and seeing her students be ready for Jr. High and beyond. Many students come back to see her as they appreciate all she did for them. She inspired my daughter to go to Arizona College Prep for Jr. High, a school that not one of her friends were attending. She is doing fantastic there and we appreciate all Mrs. Cap has done for our family! She truly is an amazing teacher!
