Janice Ashworth

Hello KESZ! I would like to nominate my amazing sister, Janice Ashworth who will celebrate her 5th year of being cancer free on August 27th of this year. Jan didn't tell us immediately when she was diagnosed in 2007 because she was busy trying to make arrangements for care of her husband who had just suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury and was in a near vegetative state in a nursing home close by her. Her first reaction to hearing she had Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Stage 3 Breast Cancer was not to worry about herself but rather how those findings would effect her family, especially her children who were already dealing with the loss of the father as they had known him. She decided if she had to have cancer then at least she would do it with dignity and her sense of humor intact! Thus began her incredible journey! Jan organized an online 'Going Away Party' before her mastectomy for her friends and family. Everyday she posted some upbeat zany thing that kept up all of our spirits. It was clear she was doing this for us. She said, "It's easier to be the cancer patient than to be the one that loves them!" After her surgery began the chemo, the loss of her hair, and the other effects that accompany this disease, despite her obvious discomfort she began a blog, posting something funny about her day and the cancer. Today, she lives in Camp Verde, AZ and has taken on the task of helping everyone around her. My sister visits and cheers patients in the nursing home where her husband passed away. her home is a beacon to anyone who needs her. Jan has a storeroom in her house that has a sign above the door that says, 'Faith' it's from that room that she packs boxes of food for those in need..We all laughed when she started raising chickens to share eggs and renamed her house, The Hen House.' If you are on my sisters Love List, you can be sure you will be loved up, hugged up, counseled and prayed for! That is who she is! (More on paper)

Patti Dallas
