Here Is How To Get The Most Out Of Your Next Virtual Happy Hour

Participating in a virtual happy hour or attending a work meeting over video chat? Here's how to make the most out of your socially distant interaction.

  • If possible, use your computer, not your phone. Your arm will get tired holding the device up the entire time, and the video and audio quality aren't as good.
  • Avoid appearing with a double chin by propping your laptop up at eye level. And mute yourself when not talking; the larger the group, the more ambient noise gets picked up.
  • If you are meeting for your job, be mindful of what's in the background. A virtual background could help in a pinch too.
  • Be the host with the most. Start your gatherings on time so people aren't left hanging on the hold screen. If you're hosting the meeting with the free version of Zoom, you'll need to restart the meeting every 40 minutes.
  • Plan things to do other than just talking. (play some games / do a scavenger hunt / work on our separate crafting projects simultaneously / demonstrate a cocktail recipe)
  • Know when to say good night. One-hour-to-90-minute range tends to be the sweet spot for most online gatherings.
