Just in case you didn't know, or have been sleeping under a rock for the past year ... Bernard Lawrence "Bernie" Madoff (born April 29, 1938, in New York City) is a former chairman of the NASDAQ stock exchange, who pleaded guilty to have operated the largest investor fraud ever committed by a single person. On March 12, 2009, Madoff pled guilty to an 11-count criminal complaint admitting to defrauding thousands of investors through a massive Ponzi scheme. Federal prosecutors estimated client losses, which included fabricated gains, of almost $65 billion.

We've received tons of letters since Bill left us, but this one is extra special. We first met Linton on Tax Day, April 15, (1988 I think) Beth & I were at PV Mall with the U.S. Postal Service, collecting last minute returns, when this 15 year old rode up on his bike and introduced himself. When I heard he was a Brophy student (I'm an alum) I told him to drop by the studio sometime to see what we did. He was there at 6am the following morning, and didn't leave for years! I'll let Linton tell the rest of the story .. Marty Manning
Hi everyone....Thanks to one of Beth & Bill’s most loyal and longtime listeners, Joanne Tucker Harrelson, I have known about Bill's death for a while.Still the shock and the deep, incredible sadness still hasn't worn off.And my tears, well, they just refuse to dry.
The pain I feel is like that of losing a brother. In fact, Beth & Bill and Marty Manning were the older siblings I never had. They, along with then KEZ General Manager Jerry Ryan, taught me the true meaning of living life to its fullest, funnest and funniest.
It's hard to believe 22 years have passed since my first day at KEZ.I was 15 years old.Back then the morning show was called the "Marty & Beth" show.Martybrought me on board as the show’s intern after learning I went to the same high school as he graduated from many decades earlier - Brophy. Not long after I started, so did Bill Austin. The show then became the "Beth and Bill Show" and I had the privilege of being there on Day 1.For the next six years, I worked for Marty, Beth, Bill and Jerry doing everything and anything they'd let me do.I was eager to learn and absorb every nugget of wisecracking wisdom they would dole out.
Every day as a teen, I would wake up at 3:30 am, run 5 miles, then head to the studios where I would write news copy for Beth & Bill, make the coffee, answer the phones, pull the next hour's music, make the 8:20am bagel and doughnut run and record bits - the most notorious being the "Before Noon Lunch Tune."All this before heading off to class.I had more laughs, more fun and learned more about loving life before 9 am than I did all day at Brophy or any day in college.
Today I look back at just how powerful and meaningful that time with them was. I spent my formative years with this crazy crew. They taught me most of what I know about sex, love, loyalty, relationships, race, religion and politics. Being there was truly an awesome experience that has forever colored almost every aspect of my life.
Indeed, Marty, Jerry, Beth & Bill weren’t just co-workers, they were my family. That's why words cannot even begin to express the pain in my heart after learning of Bill's death.I am who I am today in a very large part because of Beth's brilliant wit, Marty's charm, Jerry's confidence and Bill's inappropriate and cheesy humor. In fact, I can still hear his voice saying one of his lamest yet funniest lines at every opportunity, "I'm portable, rechargeable and eeeeasssy to mount!" As the tears tumble down my cheeks, it's memories of those fun times that get me through these terribly sad times.
After I left KEZ I kept in regular touch with Beth and Bill – well, for a while anyway. Then my own career of being a TV reporter then a NBC anchor and finally now as the Chief of Communications for the country’s 5th largest transit agency, BART, engulfed my life.It has left little time for me to reach outregularly remind the crazy crew at KEZ how important they were and continue to be to me. But if I could see them again, I would say, I love you Beth!I love you Marty! And Jerry where ever you are... I love you too!And of course, Bill.I know where you are. You'reforever in my heart.
Love,
Linton Johnson

BETH AND BILL ..... TWENTY GREAT YEARS!
Thursday 04-15-2010 1:26pm MT
JUNE 1990 - FEB 2010 ... LET'S JUST CALL IT TWENTY YEARS! That's what Beth & Bill looked like when they first teamed up in 1990. Beth had already been on 99.9 for 5 years, as the News Director and an important part of the morning show with 8 different co-hosts ... but the guy was always first on the marquee! That changed in June of 1990, when Channel 12 weatherman Bill Austin joined the team, and the Beth & Bill show was born ... notice, this time Beth was where she likes it, "on top!" And the Valley couldn't get enough of them. Suddenly, 99.9 KEZ started getting good ratings! And thousands and thousands of people started saying "I wake up with Beth & Bill!" If you're a fan, you know what comes next ... you get "dinged' with Beth's little Catholic school bell! Over the years the cast of characters grew ...as regular features included visits with Mama Jo, the Queen of Clean, Fred Rawlins "The Surly Psychic", Erica & Alex Starr charting the stars, and of course The Beautiful Tom Chambers! Remember Vince Scalise, the King of Meat? Or the custom jingles from Francine Reed & Ray Herndon? Twenty years is over 4,000 live radio shows ... and no scripts! No produced bits, either. Just two intelligent, funny, charming, very real people. Bill, the observer of life, and Beth the Soccer Mom. with their New Mexico and Indiana roots always a source of humor. Some amazing people have passed through the studio during those twenty years, including some who became good friends, like Jim Brickman "America's New Romantic Piano Sensation", Janet Napolitano, Terry Goddard, Jerry Colangelo, and of course Doc Severinson, who never missed a chance to stop by and hang out with Beth and "whats his name". Former KEZ General Manager Jerry Ryan put Beth & Bill together in 1990 with a reminder that "You don't have to be funny, just have fun". Good advice, but it turned out that they've been doing both for almost twenty years, and it has indeed been a great ride. Starting Monday March 1, Beth will go it alone, with help from Little Vinnie, Marty, Lisa, and more. It'll be good. We may just do another twenty years. And after almost 40 years in radio & TV, starting as a teenager in Roswell, New Mexico, Bill will finally get to sleep in and see some other parts of the world for more than a week at a time. Damn, it's been fun! (MM)
BACK BY POPULAR REQUEST! Beth has mentioned on a myriad of occasions her love of reading the newspaper. One weekend while perusing the paper she came across one of Jan D'Atri's Rescued Recipes. We've had so many requests for the recipe, so - here it is!

Our buddy Dan Bickley’s book "Return of the Gold: The Journey of Jerry Colangelo and the Redeem Team" is in bookstores now. MAKING THE COURTS FUN!
Monday 10-19-2009 9:40am MT
JUSTICE SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR MAKES LEARNING FUN FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS & TEACHERS Beth recently had an opportunity to attend an evening of conversation with retired US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, presented by Arizona Women's Leadership Council. The Conversation series features prominent national leaders in an intimate setting to promote open and frank conversation. Justice O'Connor talked about a website for middle school students and teachers called Our Courts, that makes learning about our court system fun!
Our Courts is a web-based education project designed to teach students civics and inspire them to be active participants in our democracy. Our Courts is the vision of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who is concerned that students are not getting the information and tools they need for civic participation, and that civics teachers need better materials and support.
Online dating services have helped men and women make potential love connections for quite a long time. Now a Valley man has created a website that does that for dogs....
Mike D'Elena was in studio and Beth was commenting about how cute he is, here's proof....and he smelled great, too!
....and possibly more. Lauren (far left), Dakota (middle left), Mika (middle right), and Mike (right) were the first success story of FindMyDogADate.com. Mike is the owner/founder of the website and Lauren was one of the first to join the site in February of 2009.
Mike D'Elena says he was motivated to start FindMyDogADate.com by his own dog, Mika. "She was lonely, sitting around and giving me the sad face, so I decided I needed to do something about it."
