Due to scheduling conflicts this week I was unable to attend screenings of new movies opening in the valley. However, for fans of film looking for opinions on two new productions, The Last Stand and Mama, the following are quotes from reviewers across the country.
The Last Stand (action/adventure) starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

What it’s about - Sheriff Owens is a man who has resigned himself to a life of fighting what little crime takes place in his sleepy border town. After a spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy, the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the hemisphere is hurtling toward the border at 200 mph in a specially outfitted car with a hostage and a fierce army.
The Pros
The Last Stand may not herald a full-scale reemergence for
There is a hit movie on Schwarzenegger's comeback trail: Bruce Kirkland: Jam! Movies

Now, the Cons
The Last Stand is such a false start, it could terminate Schwarzenegger's comeback before it begins: Joe Williams: St.Louis Post-Dispatch.
The humor keeps it from becoming completely generic but there's still nothing of particular interest here: James Berardenelli: ReelViews
By the end, even Schwarzenegger looks worn out. Maybe being governor wasn't such a hard job after all: Stephanie Zacharek: NPR

Mama (horror) starring Jessica Chastain
What it’s about - Two little girls disappeared into the woods the day that their mother was murdered. When they are rescued years later and begin a new life, they find that someone or something still wants to come tuck them in at night.
The Pros
More effective than you might expect: Rafer Guzman: Newsday
Highly charged environments, effective sound designs and powerful fantasy sequences: Joe Morgenstern: Wall Street Journal

The Cons
Can we declare a moratorium on stringy-haired ghost women who make freaky noises? Loey Lockerby:
Mama is clumsily written and choppily edited: Mary F. Pots: Time Magazine
See you at the movies!
