SR 143 closed near Sky Harbor Airport for work to open new ramps by Monday
Will impact travel at east end of airport; drivers urged to use other routes
PHOENIX – Drivers who normally use State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) to
access Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport or for travel between McDowell
Road and Interstate 10 are urged to use alternate routes this weekend.
Staggered closures are scheduled this weekend as crews prepare to open two new
ramps linking SR 143 with Sky Harbor Boulevard. The new ramps are scheduled to
open Monday (March 5) to improve connections on the airport’s east side. The
Arizona Department of Transportation recommends drivers allow extra travel time
and consider alternate routes while the following restrictions are in place:
- Southbound State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) closed from McDowell Road to University Drive from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (March 5) for restriping and sign installation. Westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard also closed between Loop 202 (Red Mt. Freeway) and 44th Street. Westbound Interstate 10 ramp to northbound SR 143 closed. Note: Northbound SR 143 ramp to westbound Sky Harbor Boulevard will close at 9 p.m. Friday and remain closed for reconstruction through June 2012. DETOUR: Access Sky Harbor Airport via University Drive and 44th Street or use west entrance near I-10 and 24th Street.
- Northbound State Route 143 closed between Sky Harbor Boulevard and Washington Street from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 p.m. Saturday (March 3); then eastbound Sky Harbor Boulevard closed between 44th Street and SR 143 from 9 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday (March 5) for restriping and sign installation. DETOUR: Access airport via University Drive and 44th Street or use west entrance near I-10 and 24th Street.
- Southbound Interstate 17 (Black Canyon Highway) narrowed to two lanes between Camelback and Thomas roads from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday (March 5) for pavement repair. DETOUR: Merge carefully and obey posted speed limits in this active work zone.
- Superstition Springs Boulevard at US 60 (Superstition Freeway) narrowed to one lane in each direction from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (March 5) for repaving. Westbound US 60 on-ramp and eastbound off-ramp closed. DETOUR: Use on- and off-ramps at Power Road.
