This week on Beth and Bill’s Grapevine, we are tasting FOUR, yes that’s right, 4 Washington Wines with our in-sutdio guests: John Bookwalter, from Bookwalter Wines, and Chef Eddie Matney, Owner of his namesake restaurant, Eddie’s House!
Lush red and vibrant white wines from the Columbia Valley... Located in the Heart of the Columbia Valley, Bookwalter Winery has been producing small lots of high quality wine since 1983. With the addition of Zelma Long as consultant winemaker in 2000, Bookwalter continues to "push the envelope" in producing some of the most profound wines available in Washington State.
With over 20 years of experience, we are committed to producing the highest quality wines in Washington State. We invite you to visit our winery and enjoy the fruits of our labor.
2006 Protagonist Red Mountain Blend
Aromatics show a distinct and complex earthy and dustiness coupled with the red and dark fruits of black cherries, red and black currants accented by resin, tar and generous sweet spices. The wine enters the palate sweet, has a generous mid palate and shows flavors of dried figs, plums and chocolate covered cherries followed by a toasty, signature Red Mountain earthy minerality. It has a long finish that is layered with rich, fine grained tannins.
2005 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
By blending in a little more Malbec, Petit Verdot and a touch of Syrah, this wine is very lush and approachable in its youth. Aromatically this Cabernet Sauvignon displays rich dark plum, black cherries, baker’s chocolate and roasted game aromas. The wine enters the palate very sweet with flavors of ripe cherries and black currants with hints of tea leaves, graphite and tobacco. A broad mid palate, with considerable weight is followed by sweet, ripe, supple tannins on the finish.
2004 Columbia Valley Merlot - LIBRARY SELECTION
Like all of our wines, our 2004 Merlot is aged exclusively in hand selected, small French oak barrels that are meticulously chosen for their richness and suitability for a particular variety of wine. Our 2004 Merlot blend was aged for 15 months in Francois Freres, Treuil and Radoux barrels that beautifully framed in the Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot fruit from this vintage.
Subplot No 22 Columbia Valley Red Wine
31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 18% Malbec, 14% Cabernet Franc, 10% Syrah, 5% Petit Verdot. This wine has always been the story within the story of each vintage and represents our 22nd multi-vintage blend in 25 years. Each vintage in this blend is aged independently in small 100% French oak barrels. By blending across vineyards, varieties and vintages, we create a wine with structure, pronounced aromatics and rich flavors.
